The International Air Transport Association has launched a new platform to support the digitalization of the air cargo supply chain.
The U.S. Airline Association’s “Enhanced Partner Identification and Connectivity” (EPIC) platform claims to simplify the process of connecting companies along the air cargo supply chain.
The International Air Transport Association stated that more than 40,000 freight forwarders exchange information with over 450 airlines and 23 third-party information service providers.
Because enterprises lack a tool to exchange the information needed to establish these business connections, the digitalization process is “essentially manual, slow, and overly complex.”
Nick Careen, Senior Vice President at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) responsible for airports, passengers, cargo, and security, said: “EPIC is a simple idea. It makes the information needed to conduct business in a digitized air cargo supply chain easily accessible. As a result, it will accelerate improvements in air cargo efficiency.”
“The timing of this initiative is crucial. Covid-19 has driven exponential growth in e-commerce, and shippers are demanding that only a digital supply chain can deliver high-quality services.”
The International Air Transport Association stated that the system also supports digital customs clearance processes. Companies will retain full control over their data and will make it available for use by airlines, freight forwarders, and any third parties, intermediaries, or IT providers involved in air cargo operations.
The International Air Transport Association stated: “EPIC has already attracted the participation of 32 airlines, 900 freight forwarding branches, 10 government/customs authorities, 5 international organizations, and 13 third-party information providers.”
